2 Women Dead, Child Hurt In ‘Despicable’ Domestic Violence Stabbings
San Antonio, Texas – Stabbed in the chest and barely conscious, the 11-year-old boy managed to utter a suspect’s name.
“Corey did it,” the boy said, lying in a pool of blood.
Corey Hiller, 36, is the man police said also fatally stabbed the boy’s mother, Rhonda Hammonds, and her friend, Casey Sweetwood, before dawn Thursday at a house in the 4500 block of Emil on the East Side.
Police said that eight hours later, while chasing Hiller on foot, he flashed an obscene gesture, hurled a knife at the officers and stepped into the path of an oncoming cement truck barreling down Interstate 35 near Walters Street.
Hiller, who was identified as Hammonds’ boyfriend, will be charged with capital murder, police said. He remained hospitalized.
Acquaintances said Hammonds had told Hiller to stay away from her. When police arrived Thursday, she was dead in a bedroom of her home.
Police found Hammonds’ son, Curtis, on a porch next door. As an officer tried to comfort him until an ambulance arrived, he asked if he could go to sleep, then fainted. The officer thought the boy might die, but he is expected to survive.
If not for his mother’s friend, Sweetwood, he might not have made it to safety. She had helped take him next door as she, bleeding from her wounds, pleaded for help. She died later Thursday morning at a local hospital. She was 48.
Police Chief William McManus called the crime a “despicable, inhuman act.”
Hammonds, whose age was unknown, and Sweetwood were good friends and tended bar and waited tables at El Jacalito, a Mexican restaurant and bar….
